Common Roofing Problems

We can quickly and effectively fix any roof problem, big or small.

Do you have a roofing problem? Sometimes roofing problems are obvious like when a gutter gets crushed by a ladder or shingles are blown off the roof during a storm. Other times, a closer look is required to identify an issue that deserves attention. Some problems are easy to detect, while others require an expert eye.

The good news is that all the problems explained below can be detected and corrected when you work with an experienced, full-service roofing contractor like Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding.

No matter how big or small your roofing damage, we have the solutions and expertise to be able to fix the issue quickly and effectively. We provide reliable roofing repair services for any of the common roofing problems that might be affecting the integrity of your roof.

Wind Damage

High winds can blow shingles, underlayment, and sheathing right off your roof, especially on the side exposed to the wind.

HOW WE FIX IT: We replace missing shingles, entire sections of the roofing, or depending on the amount of damage, we may have to do a roof replacement.

Tree Damage

Falling branches and trees can cause structural damage from small punctures to complete collapse. When left on the roof, they can scrape your shingles.

HOW WE FIX IT: We will determine if repairs can be made or if a roof replacement is the best solution. We will suggest removing branches and debris from your roof to prevent damage.

Dry Old Shingles

As shingles age, they lose their flexibility and dry out. Dry shingles can become bald, crack, bend or curl and pieces can break off. Shingles can also lose the granular coating on their surface, or nails will pop out.

HOW WE FIX IT: We will look at the age and condition of your roof to determine if you need repairs, replacement, or Roof Maxx® to add 5 to 15 years to the life of your roof, guaranteed, depending on the number of recommended applications.

Roof Leaks

Roof leaks are one of the most common roofing problems and they can be difficult to detect. If you notice water stains on your ceilings or walls, or in your attics or crawlspaces, or if you’ve had problems with ice dams, you may develop leaks. Damaged flashings or shingles can let water seep in.

HOW WE FIX IT: We will find the source of leaks by checking your rooftop, attic and ceilings and make recommendations based on the extent of the leak.

Flashing Problems

Metal roof flashing is an important part of your roofing system because it protects against water infiltration by providing a seal where there is a roof joint, chimney, vent, or an intersection of two roof surfaces. If flashings are missing, bent or damaged, they will not keep the water out.

HOW WE FIX IT: We can replace most flashings to correct the problem.

Damaged Gutters

Gutters and downspouts direct water away from your foundation. If gutters are non-existent, crushed, bent, missing, or clogged by debris, the water will spill over the edge and saturate the ground near your foundation.

HOW WE FIX IT: We will replace missing gutters or introduce you to a gutter system that includes gutter covers to keep debris out.

Roof Ventilation

Your attic needs to breathe but damaged, clogged or missing roof vents won’t allow air to circulate. This causes condensation in your attic or crawlspace and moisture can cause mold to form. Damaged vents that are not properly screened allow insects and animals to get in.

HOW WE FIX IT: We will inspect and fix vent issues.

Layered Shingles

If your former roof replacements were done by installing new roofing over old roofing, you may have problems ranging from uneven shingles to roofing that is too heavy for the frame of your building.

HOW WE FIX IT: We will remove all layers of roofing and start with a fresh new roof. Layers of roofing are not recommended.

Damage control. It's a good idea to have your roof inspected on a regular basis and fix minor issues before they become major problems.

We Are New England’s Experts for Quality Roof Services

After inspecting your roof, our certified professionals will know exactly what needs to be done to repair your roof. We are dedicated to providing quality services and products at affordable prices. We also provide emergency services when you need them.

Roof Tuneup

A roof tune-up will address problems before they become issues. It’s kind of like a car tune-up so you can keep an eye on any problem that may cause larger maintenance issues down the road. A roof tune-up is a proactive maintenance practice that you should consider. It’s also necessary before roof replacement can begin. We inspect the condition of your roof to identify problems and fix them on the spot if possible. Roof tune-ups may include the removal of debris from the rooftop and gutters, replacement of damaged or missing shingles, elimination of nail pop ups, gutter inspection, leak analysis, inspection of flashing, pipe collars and vents, and if necessary, inspection of attics or crawlspaces for leaks or water stains.

TUNE UP PROCESS:
  1. We will bang down any nails, popping the shingles up.
  2. If any nails have popped through a shingle, we will bang nail down and install flashing under that shingle and add sealant.
  3. If shingle has a crack, we’ll install flashing under the shingle and add sealant.
  4. We will add sealant to any exposed nail.
  5. We will install sealant around chimney flashing and all perforations in the roof.
  6. We will install new rubber gaskets over bathroom pipes and add sealant.

(Replacing any shingles or chimney flashing is not included in a tune up and is considered a repair, which is a separate price.)

ROOF CLEANING FROM A TRUSTED ROOFER

What causes roof stains?

Do you have green or dark stains or streaks on the shingles of your roof? These stains are likely caused by algae, moss or lichens. While algae might look bad, it doesn’t typically cause damage to shingles; however, moss and lichens can penetrate shingles and potentially cause structural damage.

Sometimes a roof may have stains only on one side. These organisms thrive in moisture and tend to grow on roof slopes that don’t get a lot of sunlight, such as the north-facing or shaded areas.

The Roof Shampoo Difference

Common roof-cleaning methods like using chlorine beach and high-pressure power washing can damage your shingles, flashing and underlayment. To protect your roof, our technicians choose Roof Shampoo® to effectively remove algae, moss and lichens. This eco-friendly solution is suitable for asphalt and fiberglass shingles and doesn’t contain harmful bleach or phosphates. It also doesn’t require high-pressure power washing, scrubbing or brushing. Best of all, this solution won’t hurt your plants or vegetation. This makes Roof Shampoo® a safer, smarter cleaning method.

When you choose Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding for your roof-cleaning needs, our skilled roofing professionals take the time to fully inspect your roof. Then, they remove stains using the Roof Shampoo® rinsing system and Roof Shampoo® stain remover for a clean, stain-free surface you’ll love! There are many reasons why we trust Roof Shampoo to provide our customers with superior results

Roof Shampoo Diamond Dealer Authorized Contractor Award
The organic materials in your shingles act as a food source for organisms like algae, lichens and moss. By cleaning your roof with Roof Shampoo®, we can put an end to roof stains and prevent damage.

  1. Moss and lichens can penetrate your shingles and roof deck, causing wood rot. Moisture can penetrate cracks in the wood and create an environment friendly to mold growth. Roof Shampoo® can help prevent permanent damage to your roof deck and help you avoid having to make any costly roof repairs. If damage has already been done, Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding provides professional roof repair and maintenance services to Massachusetts and Connecticut homeowners.
  2. A stained roof can lead to cancellation of your homeowners’ insurance policy. Untreated roof stains are seen as a risk to insurance companies, because they can negatively impact the integrity of your roof and eventually lead to mold growth inside of your home. By calling on the professionals at Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding to clean your roof, you can protect your roof and your own peace of mind.
  3. If your roof is covered in algae or moss, sunlight will not be properly reflected. Your shingles will absorb heat from the sun’s rays, therefore heating your attic and increasing your cooling costs. Roof Shampoo® can safely and gently remove staining and restore your roof’s health and efficiency.
  4. A professional roof cleaning done the right way can help you avoid a re-roof when it’s not really necessary. Roof replacement is a costly job, but Roof Shampoo® can improve the look of your roof, as well as remove organisms that can deteriorate your shingles and roof deck, therefore prolonging the life of your roof.
  5. A stained roof is ugly. Whether you are trying to sell your home or just trying to maintain curb appeal, Roof Shampoo® is an effective solution to clean your roof and improve your home’s exterior.
  6. Algae, lichens and moss can penetrate shingles, allowing in moisture and potentially causing wood rot. The smell of rotting wood attracts unwanted critters. These critters can eventually make their way into your attic. According to the President of Tennessee Wildlife Management, Inc., animals are attracted to the smell of rotting wood, mold and mildew, because they associate this smell with food and shelter. Roof Shampoo® can help prevent an animal invasion!
  7. Consumer Reports praises Roof Shampoo® as a smart alternative to roof cleaning with bleach.

Roof Maxx

THINK YOU NEED A NEW ROOF? THINK AGAIN.

Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding is your local Roof Maxx contractor. Roof Maxx is a soy-based all-natural solution that’s safe for people, pets, and the environment. Once applied, Roof Maxx can add 5 to 15 years of life to your asphalt shingles, guaranteed. When shingles start to age, they can become dry and brittle from exposure to the elements. Roof Maxx penetrates deep into the coating of your shingles to renew the waterproofing capabilities and to improve the appearance of an aging roof. We will let you know if Roof Maxx can add a few more years your roof. Roof Maxx is an affordable alternative to roof replacement, and it reduces roof debris in our landfills.

No matter how well your roof was built when it was new, and no matter how careful you’ve been with it since, the elements take their toll on it. Over time, the daily heating and cooling cycle causes the tar to expand and contract, which gradually makes it stiffer and less resistant to splitting and cracking. Those small cracks then create an entry point for water that can damage the entire roof. Roof Maxx addresses this problem with an innovative approach that can add years to the life of your roof. Roof Maxx goes on as a viscid oil that softens and strengthens the tar insulation on your roof, reversing the effects of age and restoring the roof’s ability to withstand normal weather conditions over time. Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding is proud to offer Roof Maxx treatment all over the western Massachusetts and Connecticut areas.

BENEFITS OF A ROOF MAXX TREATMENT

Roof Maxx uses a remarkable bio-based soy oil formula that applies billions of microscopic beads to the roof surface. When applied, it seeps down into all the places water normally goes, and when it makes contact with asphalt, it forms a bond that loosens up and softens the material. The newly revitalized tar is now able to expand and contract without cracking, which helps seal the small gaps that have already opened up, and it also prevents the formation of new faults. This can dramatically extend the life of your roof, allowing you to put off more costly repairs and replacement and potentially save a lot of money.
