Warm temperatures bring new difficulties
Problems with melting: wwlp.com
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – While there are some that were out in t-shirts Monday, this warmth brings new concerns. February sunshine brought temperatures into the lower 50s in Western Massachusetts on Monday.
Wherever you look, puddles and areas of slush are everywhere. But puddles aren’t the only downside to this mild weather.
One of the problems you’re more likely to notice is that snow mounds along the sides of the roads will melt during the day creating puddles and those puddles will refreeze at night creating a sheet of ice.
The ice on the ground isn’t the only worry, when there is also ice overhead.
Snow that melts on your roof during the day and freezes at night can lead to more leaks in your roof when ice dams form. The melting snow up above also causes other worries.
“With all the melting I’m worried about when I go in and out of my house, if the icicles are going to fall on me or my son, or if I go anywhere over here if they’re going to fall on any of us,” said Charelle Arrington of Springfield.
While the ice above and below is something to watch out for, the melting snow up against your home could lead to some water runoff into your home.
“One of our inconveniences is the way our property runs we end up having water in our cellar and the sub pump pumps it out, it’s happened for years, not lately, but when we first lived there,” said Deborah Dunn.
So while you are out basking in this week’s sunshine, watch out for the problems it could bring.
